News Items

I've posted an update to the Block-Checker page as well, but AIMFix has been updated to remove Block-Checker. I decided that it made sense to create a module for AIMFix to remove Block-Checker and IM-Names. As soon as I have a chance I will update AIMFix again to remove IM-Names more completely than it does currently.

Someone recently sent me email regarding marketing AIMFix. This mail accidentally was deleted in my spam folder (I got a half-second long glimpse of it as it was being deleted). If you are the original sender, please resend your email. Thanks!

I forgot to post a news item last time, but there have been some bugfixes to AIMFix recently to resolve problems with command line options, so you should now be able to specify log file locations properly now. I also added updates yesterday and today to handle some new virus variants. In addition, the much-publicized and over-hyped "Kama Sutra" virus has at least partially been added to AIMFix as well.

I had added a malicious item related to this virus to the AIMFix definitions quite some time ago without even realizing it. After seeing the news items on the Kama Sutra worm, I also added some of the known virus files and registry keys to AIMFix to remove them as well. I figured it certainly wont hurt to remove any of those components if they are found, though I wouldn't consider AIMfix a complete solution for cleaning this item, it's just going to remove some of the main pieces.

It looks like previous incarnations of AIMFix were missing "legacy" service entries when removing bogus services and FU Rootkit variants. I have updated the code to check for and remove these registry entries. Note that if you were infected with a rootkit variant, AIMFix would still have removed the actual components. All that would have been left behind is a registry key that points to a nonexistent file.

AIMFix 1.5 released!

Finally, after many weeks of talking about it, thinking about it, and finally getting around to it, I've released the first major AIMFix update in quite some time. AIMFix 1.5 looks on the outside almost identical to previous versions. However, the entire back end has been rewritten from the ground up. 1.5 is the first step in a series of steps on the roadmap to revamping AIMFix into an entirely new system. I'll let you all know as the next steps get taken, but suffice it to say that it's my hope that my little pet project will be growing up very soon and becoming more and more useful to you all.

Thanks to all the AIMFix users out there for all your support since the first AIMFix over a year and a half ago!
